The route starts at playa del Milagro and goes along the coast until the Arrabassada Beach where riders follow a short loop passing by some of the city’s monuments, such as the Amphitheatre, the Roman Circus and the walls, among others.

The 98% is travelled over local roads with little traffic and goes through the towns of Els Pallaresos, Perafort, La Secuita, Vallmoll, Picamoixons, La Riba, Farena, Capafonts, Prades, Cornudella, Arboli, La Mussara, Montral and Alcover. From there it returns to Tarragona, going back again through La Secuita, and El Catllar…

The route can be divided into three stretches. The first stretch is about 45 kilometers on easy terrain and leads from the beach to the foot of La Riba, where the second stretch begins.  The second stretch is the most challenging and the most beautiful.  This stretch of the route takes riders over 90 kilometers of hilly terrain in continuous uphills and descents through the mountains, reaching a cummulative elevation gain of over 2000 meters. The beauty of both the seascape and forrested landscape accompanies the rider over the entire second stretch. This stretch also includes four difficult ascents plus some other challenges and “hidden surprises” which we’ve prepared,  but won’t reveal here so that you may experience firsthand what it takes to be a true “Gran Fonder.”

Once riders arrive to the provisioning station at La Riba, they’ll begin the climb to the first of the mountain passes, a distance of 7 kilometers to Farena. Shortly after they’ll face the first challenge: a uphill of 1 kilometer with an average gradient of 15%.

The second mountain pass, which begins just before reaching Capafonts, el Picoranda, is a moderate distance of  4-kilometers.

Then riders will arrive to Prades, where after taking a break in a special and unique way, they’ll hit the road for another 500-meter stretch followed by a descent leading to Cornudella.

Once past the reservoir and its “special road”, riders face the most difficult stretch of the day….

The third mountain pass, which goes over a long, winding, disused road has uphills with inclinations of over 17% over nearly 4 kilometers leading to the beautiful town of Arbolí; and then onto an easier stretch of 3 kilometers, just before facing the last climb of the day.  Riding along one of the most charming roads of the area,  riders will be able see the forest nearly 1000 meter high blending into views of the Mediterranean Sea and fields of Tarragona. Finally we will reach the old abandoned military barracks, Castillejos after ascending another close to 5 kilometers more.

The tour continues at 1000 meters altitude until the crossing at the town of Mussara in the direction of Montral, where the hardest part of stretch comes to an end marking the beginning of the descent with views of the sea.

Once back in Alcover riders will again take the secondary roads leading to the third and final stretch of the route which  runs through Vallmoll, La Secuita and El Catllar before entering Tarragona, along the way enjoying the wonderful picturesque Roman walls of Tarragona.
